Abstract:
Optical activity is the ability to rotate the polarization of light as observed in circular birefringent materials such as quartz and solutions of chiral molecules like sugar (sucrose). The study of optical activity spans many disciplines and has applications in various fields: e.g. in optics to manipulate the polarization of light, in chemistry to characterize substance in solutions and in medicine to measure blood sugar concentration. Natural chiral materials are too weak in producing optical activity in the nano scales, hindering their incorporation with recent rapidly developing nanotechnology. On the contrary, metamaterials - artificial materials engineered through structural designs to provide specific properties not readily available in nature - can serve as a possible solution for the integration. In this presentation I will summarize some of the recent developments in chiral metaimaterials and report some of our preliminary works on 2D double layered metallic chiral metamertials.
