The event, themed "World-Class Universities and Global Governance Talents", featured discussions between Professor Charles A Laughlin from the University of Virginia and Lou Yongqi, the vice president of Tongji University, emphasizing the significance of cultural understanding and international exposure in shaping the leaders of tomorrow.

During the dialogue, Lou highlighted Tongji University's commitment to cultivating global governance talent through a global mindset and international collaboration. He emphasized the university's mission to equip students with the skills and perspectives necessary to address the complexities of global governance effectively, preparing them to make meaningful contributions on a global scale.

By broadening their international horizons and enhancing their global competencies, we prepare them to make impactful contributions on a global scale," Lou said.

Drawing from his expertise in managing overseas study programs, Professor Laughlin emphasized the critical importance of language learning for international exchange. He shared personal anecdotes of his journey in learning Chinese and overseeing international programs, highlighting the profound impact language acquisition and cross-cultural experiences had on his career trajectory.

Lou, reflecting on his academic journey, emphasized the importance of a global mindset, even without studying abroad. He credited Tongji University for providing him with a global vision and enhancing his understanding of the significance of effective communication in a global context.

In an interview following the event, Lou reiterated Tongji University's commitment to international cooperation in building a world-class academic institution. The Shanghai-based university, with a rich history of international collaboration dating back to its founding in 1907, has launched strategic initiatives aimed at enhancing students' international competencies through platforms such as the Sino-German School for Postgraduate Studies and the Sino-French Institute of Engineering and Management, which offer opportunities for dual degrees and international exchanges, Lou said.
